Facial Sensitivity: An Expression of Underlying Imbalance

Facial Sensitivity: An Expression of Underlying Imbalance

Facial sensitivity is often described as fragile skin. Yet persistent redness, flushing, puffiness and discomfort can reflect a deeper pattern of dysregulation, where vascular reactivity, barrier weakness and inflammatory signalling reinforce one another over time.

When this pattern becomes chronic, the skin is easily unsettled and slower to recover. Environmental exposure, thermal fluctuation, physical exertion, dietary triggers, alcohol intake and emotional strain may all contribute to visible reactivity. In some cases, inflammation is also accompanied by puffiness, suggesting impaired skin regulation, fluid imbalance and reduced recovery capacity.

In this case supervised by Amy Wilson, Facialist and Skincare Professional, Founder of The Skin Space, the objective was to support the skin without forcing a rapid correction. The priority was to create the conditions for calmer, stronger and more stable skin over time.

Clinical focus

The patient presented with visible facial inflammation, recurrent flushing, puffiness and ongoing sensitivity through the cheeks. The skin appeared reactive, uncomfortable and slow to settle.

Photographs were taken at T0 baseline and T8, week 8. The protocol combined daily oral intake of The Skin Biotic nutraceutical, one sachet per day, with twice-daily use of The Gentle Cleanser and The Active Cream.

The clinical priorities were:

→ Control vascular inflammation and reinforce photoprotection
→ Repair the barrier to strengthen resilience and recovery
→ Provide daily support to reduce heat, discomfort and swelling
→ Support visible vascular stability
→ Intervene early to limit chronic progression

Rather than treating redness as an isolated surface concern, the protocol addressed the broader biological context behind sensitivity: inflammatory load, barrier fragility, microbiome balance and the skin’s ability to regulate itself.

How AWvi supported the skin

The Skin Biotic supported redness-prone and sensitive skin from within by addressing underlying biological drivers such as microbiome balance, inflammatory signalling and barrier resilience. By supporting the gut-skin axis, it helped contribute to a more stable cutaneous environment.

The Gentle Cleanser supported the external phase of the protocol by cleansing without disrupting the skin barrier or surface microbiome. For sensitive skin, this is essential. Cleansing must remove daily impurities while preserving the acid mantle, barrier lipids and skin comfort.

The Active Cream helped restore barrier lipids, regulate inflammatory signalling and reinforce cutaneous resilience with biomimetic components designed to work in harmony with skin physiology.

Together, the protocol reflected AWvi’s inside-out and outside-in approach: supporting the internal systems that influence skin behaviour while protecting the external barrier that allows the skin to recover.

Expert insight

'My patient came to me with skin that was visibly inflamed, easily flushed, and showing clear signs of puffiness and ongoing sensitivity through the cheeks.

What stood out was not just the level of visible inflammation, but the sense that the skin was struggling to settle and recover properly.

My focus was to support the skin in a way that respected its physiology, using a combination of internal support, barrier-conscious topical care, and close attention to potential aggravating factors.

Rather than trying to force a quick correction, we worked to create the conditions for the skin to become calmer, stronger, and more settled over time.

As that process progressed, we saw a clearer reduction in visible flushing, less swelling, and a more even, comfortable-looking complexion overall.

For me, this case shows how much can change when skin is supported consistently and thoughtfully, with attention to both internal and external influences on chronic facial inflammation.'

Visible evolution

After eight weeks, the skin appeared calmer, less flushed and more even. The visible reduction in redness and puffiness suggested improved tolerance and a more regulated cutaneous response.

The change was not only cosmetic. It reflected a shift in the skin’s behaviour: less volatility, reduced inflammatory expression and greater capacity to recover from daily triggers.

This case illustrates a central principle of AWvi’s approach: sensitive skin should not be addressed only at the surface. When redness, swelling and reactivity persist, care must support the biological systems that influence inflammation, barrier function and microbiome stability.
