Dullness is often treated as a surface concern, associated with a lack of visible radiance. Yet dullness-prone skin can reflect a slower biological rhythm involving dehydration, reduced epidermal renewal, oxidative stress, barrier fatigue and microbiome imbalance across both the gut and the skin.
When this pattern persists, the skin may appear flat, uneven or tired, even without visible irritation. Tone can look muted, texture can become rougher, congestion may become more apparent and the skin’s ability to reflect light evenly can be reduced.
In this case supervised by Dr Rosie Sutton, Founder and Director of Tweak East, the objective was to support the biological conditions required for clearer light reflection, smoother texture and more visible vitality over time. The protocol combined systemic support with local skin care, addressing hydration, renewal, barrier function, oxidative stress and microbiome balance.
Clinical focus

Dullness-prone skin reflects a loss of visible vitality involving slowed epidermal renewal, dehydration, oxidative stress and microbiome imbalance across both gut and skin. It can combine uneven tone, muted radiance, rough texture, congestion and signs of barrier fatigue, with a reduced capacity to reflect light evenly.
Photographs were taken at T0 baseline and T4, week 4. The protocol was conducted under the supervision of Dr Rosie Sutton and combined daily intake of The Skin Biotic nutraceutical, one sachet daily, with twice-daily use of The Gentle Cleanser, The Power Serum and The Active Cream.
The clinical priorities were:
→ Support a healthy gut and skin microbial environment
→ Restore barrier strength to improve luminosity
→ Lower inflammatory activity and limit oxidative stress
→ Remove products or behaviours that weaken renewal
→ Support hydration, cell turnover and stable radiance
How AWvi supported the skin
The Skin Biotic supported dullness-prone skin from within by acting on the gut-skin axis, microbial diversity, immune balance and inflammatory pathways. In this case, its role was to support the internal conditions that influence hydration, epidermal renewal, barrier function and visible radiance.
The Gentle Cleanser supported the topical phase by removing daily impurities, pollutants, oxidised residues and excess sebum without disrupting the microbiome or weakening the barrier. For dullness-prone skin, cleansing must clarify the surface while preserving comfort, hydration and barrier integrity.
The Power Serum helped target dullness through multi-layer hydration, dermal matrix support, barrier reinforcement and oxidative stress defence. Its role was to improve smoothness, suppleness and the skin’s capacity to reflect light more evenly.
The Active Cream reinforced the final phase of the protocol by restoring hydration quality, replenishing the lipid matrix and supporting surface renewal. In this case, it helped improve comfort, texture, resilience and visible radiance through biomimetic support.
Together, the four-solution protocol reflected AWvi’s inside-out and outside-in approach: supporting the biological systems that influence skin vitality while reinforcing the surface conditions required for smoother, clearer and more radiant-looking skin.
Expert insight
“Dull skin often indicates that the skin’s biological activity is no longer expressing itself efficiently at the surface.
It is not simply a question of reduced glow, but of a skin environment affected by slower renewal, dehydration, oxidative stress, barrier fatigue, and microbiome imbalance.
In this case, AWvi’s solutions supported a more coherent approach by acting both systemically and locally, improving the conditions required for clearer light reflection, smoother texture, and more visible vitality over time.
I also believe lifestyle plays a meaningful role: protecting against UV, improving sleep quality, limiting oxidative stress, simplifying skincare, and maintaining nutritional balance can make a real difference in restoring and preserving radiance.”

Visible evolution
After four weeks, the skin appeared clearer, smoother and more even. The overall tone looked less muted, surface texture appeared more refined and the face showed improved visible vitality.
This case illustrates that dullness should not be understood only as reduced surface brightness. When hydration, barrier strength, epidermal renewal and oxidative stress are not well regulated, the skin can lose the clarity and vitality associated with healthy function.
By combining The Skin Biotic, The Gentle Cleanser, The Power Serum and The Active Cream, the protocol helped support the internal and external conditions needed for more hydrated, smoother and more light-reflective skin.
