Gut-Skin Flare: When the Gut Shapes the Skin

Gut-Skin Flare: When the Gut Shapes the Skin

Persistent facial redness, inflammatory breakouts and heightened reactivity are often treated as isolated skin concerns. Yet they may also coincide with disruption along the gut-skin axis, particularly when intestinal inflammation and microbial imbalance are present.

When these mechanisms interact, immune signalling may become dysregulated, skin tolerance can decline and inflammatory activity may persist. The result is often a skin environment that becomes harder to stabilise, with slower recovery and less predictable flare behaviour.

In this case supervised by Clarissa Grahn, Owner of The Skin Specialist, the onset of the client’s inflammatory skin concerns coincided with colitis. The objective was therefore to support gut microbial balance from within, while the practitioner addressed visible inflammation through calming in-clinic treatments and a simplified topical regimen.

Clinical focus

Inflammatory facial flares may emerge alongside intestinal dysbiosis, altered immune signalling and reduced skin tolerance. When these factors persist, redness, bacterial imbalance and impaired recovery can be sustained.

Photographs were taken at T0 baseline and T5, month 5. The protocol was conducted under the supervision of Clarissa Grahn and combined daily oral intake of The Skin Biotic nutraceutical, one sachet per day, with practitioner-led in-clinic treatments.

The clinical priorities were:

→ Support gut microbial balance and beneficial bacterial diversity
→ Reinforce intestinal barrier function and balanced immune signalling
→ Promote more stable communication along the gut-skin axis
→ Complement calming in-clinic treatments to reduce visible reactivity
→ Encourage progressive restoration of skin stability

How AWvi supported the skin

The Skin Biotic supported the gut-skin axis by helping restore microbial balance, reinforce intestinal barrier integrity and modulate immune signalling.

In this case, the role of AWvi was specifically inside-out: supporting the internal biological conditions that may influence cutaneous reactivity, inflammatory load and skin resilience over time.

Its prebiotic and probiotic action helped maintain a more stable intestinal ecosystem, supporting beneficial microbial diversity and ecosystem stability. This gut-directed approach complemented Clarissa Grahn’s practitioner-led treatments, including gentle barrier-supportive skincare, skin-friendly make-up guidance and calming algae peel treatments.

Together, the protocol reflected AWvi’s inside-out philosophy: supporting the systemic factors that shape skin behaviour, while the practitioner addressed visible reactivity and comfort through local, calming care.

Expert insight

“This client’s inflammatory acne began shortly after a colitis diagnosis.

We focused on reducing inflammation from both the inside and out using The Skin Biotic, gentle barrier-supportive skincare, skin-friendly makeup and calming algae peel treatments.

Within five months, her skin was dramatically calmer, clearer and far more comfortable.”

Visible evolution

After five months, the skin appeared significantly calmer, clearer and more comfortable. Visible redness was reduced, inflammatory activity appeared less intense and the overall complexion looked more stable.

This case illustrates why gut-linked inflammatory flares should not be approached only as surface breakouts. When intestinal imbalance, immune signalling and reduced skin tolerance coincide, the skin may express internal disruption through persistent redness, discomfort and inflammatory lesions.

By combining The Skin Biotic with practitioner-led in-clinic treatments, the protocol helped support gut-skin communication while calming visible reactivity at the surface. The result was a progressive restoration of skin stability, with improved comfort and reduced visible inflammation over time.
